The sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) is a small but impressively hardy pupfish native to a broad stretch of the Atlantic coast, ranging from Massachusetts down through northeastern Mexico, across the West Indies, and along the northern coast of South America. In the wild it turns up in an unusually wide range of habitats, salt marshes, brackish creeks, hypersaline lagoons, and even fresh water, often rooting around in muddy, turbid shallows where vegetation offers some cover. That tolerance for difficult conditions carries over well into the aquarium. Its diet in the wild is varied and opportunistic, taking in algae, organic detritus, tiny crustaceans, and insect larvae, which makes feeding in captivity refreshingly straightforward. The species is generally peaceful in disposition, though males have a territorial streak and can bicker among themselves, so keeping a well-structured group with enough space to spread out helps keep the peace. Unlike many of its killifish relatives, this is not a seasonal species, it does not follow an annual cycle of drying and rehydration, and it reproduces readily under aquarium conditions. For a keeper interested in North American native fish or simply wanting a resilient, undemanding species that can handle a range of water conditions, this little pupfish is a genuinely solid choice.
