The bluestripe pipefish (Doryrhamphus excisus) is a small, slender reef dweller with a vivid blue lateral stripe and a distinctive fan-shaped tail that sets it apart from most other pipefish at a glance. Its range is impressively broad, stretching from East Africa and the Persian Gulf all the way across the Indo-Pacific to the western coast of the Americas, where it tucks itself into reef crevices, coral rubble, and the undersides of ledges from shallow lagoons down to depths of around 45 meters or more. In the wild it nearly always appears in bonded pairs, and that pairing behavior carries into captivity. This species is monogamous and tends to range together rather than aggressively defending a fixed patch of reef. That said, males will not tolerate other males, and encounters between them can turn fatal, so keeping more than one male in the same system is a serious mistake. Like all pipefish, it feeds by drawing small crustaceans and zooplankton through its tubular snout, which makes feeding in a typical reef tank genuinely challenging. Most individuals require live copepods or amphipods, ideally from a well-seeded refugium. Reproduction follows the pipefish pattern, with the male brooding eggs in a pouch beneath his tail. This is a rewarding species for intermediate keepers who are prepared to meet its dietary needs.
