The Dwarf Distichodus (Distichodus decemmaculatus) is a refreshing outlier in a genus that otherwise tends toward fish you'd need a serious large tank to house. Native to the central Congo basin, this little herbivore tops out around three inches, making it one of the few members of its family that fits comfortably in a modest setup. In terms of looks, it carries the chunky, torpedo-shaped body typical of the group, marked with a row of dark spots along the flanks that give it a clean, graphic pattern. In the wild it grazes on plant matter in Congo's soft, warm waters, and that dietary preference carries straight into captivity. Soft-leaved aquarium plants will be on the menu, so hardy species or artificial plants are the practical route if you want a decorated tank. Behaviorally it tends to be active and curious without being aggressive toward similarly sized tankmates, though keeping a small group rather than a lone specimen generally brings out more natural behavior. It sits at intermediate care level mostly because of the plant-grazing tendency and the need for consistent water quality, but a fishkeeper with some experience maintaining a planted or Congo biotope setup should find this species genuinely rewarding over its five-to-eight-year lifespan.
