The banded panchax (Epiplatys annulatus) is a tiny but visually distinctive killifish from the coastal swamps and shallow lowland waters of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Four broad, dark vertical bands alternate with lighter yellowish bars along the body from snout to tail, giving it the bold patterning that earns it the nickname clown killie. Color expression varies across populations, particularly in the unpaired fins, where some forms show yellow dorsal and anal fins while others have a red margin on the anal fin. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly in some resources, this species does have somewhat specialized needs and does best in a mature, well-planted setup rather than a generic community tank. Its tiny adult size makes it vulnerable alongside boisterous or large tankmates, so pairing it with similarly small, quiet species is important. It is gregarious by nature, and keeping a group of eight or more brings out noticeably bolder behavior and reduces the shyness that single fish or small groups tend to show. Unlike many killifish, it is not seasonal, so it does not require the egg-drying techniques associated with annual species. Breeding is relatively straightforward in a species-specific setup with plenty of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and fry can appear with minimal intervention in a well-established tank.
