The Elongate Zoanthid (Epizoanthus leptoderma) is a colonial soft coral native to the cooler waters of the eastern Pacific, found along the coastlines of the United States and Canada. Unlike the tropical zoanthids that dominate most reef aquariums, this species comes from subtropical conditions, which already makes it an unusual candidate for the home tank and worth some extra thought before acquiring. As a sessile creature, it spends its life anchored to hard substrate, extending its polyps to filter nutrients and particulate matter from the surrounding water. The elongated form that gives it its common name sets it apart visually from the more compact, disc-like polyps of its better-known relatives. In an aquarium setting, it appreciates lower light intensities and moderate water movement. Conditions that mirror the somewhat shaded, current-influenced rocky habitats of its native range. This isn't a beginner's coral. Its subtropical origins mean water temperature and water quality management require more attention than a typical tropical reef setup demands. Hobbyists who have some experience dialing in stable conditions and who enjoy keeping less conventional invertebrates will find this an interesting and rewarding species to work with.
