Hispaniolan Gambusia (Gambusia hispaniolae) is a small livebearing fish native to the island of Hispaniola, shared today by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In the wild, it tends to occupy freshwater springs that flow into larger brackish and saltwater lakes. A fairly specific habitat that gives you a hint about its tolerance for harder, mineral-rich water. Like other members of the Gambusia genus, it is a compact and active fish, with females growing noticeably larger than males, which is typical for the group. As an omnivore, it will accept a wide range of prepared and live foods without much fuss. That said, it carries an intermediate care rating, partly because replicating the harder, alkaline water conditions it prefers is important for long-term health. This is not a fish that will thrive in soft, acidic setups. Gambusia in general have a reputation for being nippy and somewhat aggressive for their size, and this species should be kept with that in mind when selecting tankmates. A species-focused setup or a community of similarly robust fish with comparable water needs will generally work better than mixing it into a soft-water community tank. Not the most commonly seen gambusia in the hobby, but an interesting choice for livebearers enthusiasts looking for something a little different.
