Found darting across rocky streambeds in China and Taiwan, Rhinogobius gigas is one of the larger members of a genus packed with charismatic bottom-dwellers. The name 'gigas' hints at its relatively robust build compared to its many smaller cousins, though it still fits comfortably in a modest aquarium setup. Like other rhinogobiids, it uses fused pelvic fins as a suction cup to anchor itself against currents, and you will often find it perched on rocks or substrate rather than actively swimming in open water. That behavior makes it endlessly watchable. It has a bold, inquisitive quality that belies its small frame. Males of the genus are typically more colorful and territorial than females, so keeping multiple males together in a smaller tank can lead to scrapping. A single male with one or two females, or a small group in a well-decorated tank with plenty of broken line-of-sight, tends to work better. Despite looking a bit fierce in posture, this goby is generally fine with peaceful tankmates that occupy different water column levels. It is considered a forgiving choice for newer keepers, provided the tank is mature and well-oxygenated to reflect its cool, flowing native waters.
