Gold Nugget Pleco

A fish with no settled common name, Baryancistrus sp cf xanthellus is one of the so-called "gold nugget" plecos from Brazil's Rio Xingu watershed, catalogued by hobbyists under the L-number system as L081. Its exact identity remains genuinely uncertain. It carries noticeably smaller body spots than the related gold nugget forms (L018, L085, L177), yet the scientists who described the parent species noted wide variation in spot size across individuals, leaving the question open. A variant collected further upstream near São Félix do Xingu, sometimes called "L081 stardust," has particularly fine spotting and adds another layer to the puzzle. Like other members of Baryancistrus, it can be told apart from similar loricariid genera by a distinctive enlarged membrane behind the last branched dorsal-fin ray. Juveniles are relatively easy-going, which partly explains the beginner care rating, but adults, males especially, become strongly territorial and will not tolerate other plecos or bottom-dwellers they view as rivals. Tankmates that occupy the mid and upper water column, like medium to large characids, tend to work out best. Breeding appears to be extraordinarily rare in captivity, with only isolated reports of success, and would demand a large, well-oxygenated setup and a high-quality diet consistently maintained over time.
