The Golden Vampire Pleco (Leporacanthicus heterodon) earns its dramatic name from a pair of prominent upper-jaw fangs that set this genus apart from virtually every other loricariid. What those teeth are actually for remains a bit of a mystery, though most observers suspect they help the fish grip snails and invertebrates rather than anything more sinister. Native to the Xingu River basin in Brazil, this is a rheophilic species adapted to fast-moving, clear water over rocky substrate. In terms of personality, it sits somewhere between its fearsome name and its actual behavior. Generally unbothered by fish occupying other parts of the water column, but quite territorial toward bottom-dwellers, especially anything with a similar color pattern. In a well-planned setup, larger characins and rheophilic cichlids from the same region make sensible companions. If you want to keep more than one, you'll need genuinely spacious quarters. Breeding in captivity appears to be essentially undocumented, so captive-bred specimens are not something you're likely to encounter. When purchasing, take a close look at the belly and eyes. A rounded midsection and clear, full eyes are signs of a healthy, well-fed fish, while sunken eyes or a pinched belly suggest a specimen that struggled through import.
