Mahachai Betta

Found in a remarkably specific habitat, Betta mahachaiensis is a small wild betta native to the nipa palm swamps of Samut Sakhon province, just south of Bangkok. It was once suspected to be a hybrid, but genetic and morphological work confirmed it as a genuine species in its own right. In the wild, pairs use the water-filled cavities of nipa palm bracts for courtship, bubble-nest construction, and raising fry. A highly specialized relationship you won't find in many other fish. Visually, it's a dark, slender fish with a brown-to-black body overlaid with iridescent green to bluish-green scales, two parallel metallic bars on the gill covers, and fins that contrast dark rays against glowing interradial membranes. It belongs to the Betta splendens complex and shares some traits with its more famous relatives, but the absence of red on the tail and the distinctly blue-green palette set it apart. Temperamentally it's considerably calmer than the domestic betta, and males can sometimes be kept together in a spacious, well-planted tank with broken sightlines. That said, it does best in a species-focused setup or alongside very quiet companions. Breeding follows the typical osphronemid bubble-nest pattern, with the male taking sole charge of the eggs and fry, and is well within reach for intermediate keepers willing to set up a dedicated spawning tank.
