The guineafowl puffer (Arothron meleagris) is one of those fish that genuinely has a personality. Keepers often report that these fish quickly learn to associate their owner with feeding time, swimming to the front of the tank with obvious anticipation. A level of awareness you don't expect from a fish. The name comes from the classic white-spotted-on-dark-brown pattern that covers most individuals, though a rarer all-yellow color form exists and turns plenty of heads at fish stores. In the wild, this species ranges across a huge swath of the Indo-Pacific and into the Eastern Pacific, cruising clear lagoons and seaward reef slopes where it picks apart branching corals, sponges, mollusks, and other sessile invertebrates with its fused beak-like teeth. That diet is the central challenge in captivity. This fish is fundamentally incompatible with a reef setup and will systematically dismantle any invertebrates you care about. It grows large and needs a substantial tank to match. Like all puffers, it can inflate when threatened, so always move it with a container rather than a net to avoid stressing it unnecessarily. Given its size, appetite, and reef-wrecking tendencies, it suits an experienced keeper who can dedicate a species-appropriate fish-only system to it.
