Found along the Atlantic slope of southeastern Mexico and northern Guatemala, Herichthys pearsei is a large herbivorous cichlid that occupies lakes and the lower stretches of river valleys, where it browses on aquatic and bank-side vegetation. It can also tolerate brackish conditions, which speaks to its adaptability in the wild. In terms of temperament, this species defies the aggressive reputation that many Central American cichlids carry. It is notably placid for its size and can be housed alongside other large fish, including big cyprinids, characins, catfish, and loricariids. Just be sure any tankmates can also handle the hard, alkaline water this species requires. The genus Herichthys has a somewhat tangled taxonomic history, having been shuffled in and out of Cichlasoma over the decades before being firmly reestablished as a distinct group. Care-wise, the beginner designation is a pleasant surprise for a cichlid of this stature, though the sheer tank volume needed to house adults properly is a real commitment. Breeding has been achieved but is not well documented. Like most substrate-spawning cichlids, pairs raise their young together, with the male excavating a pit for the eggs beforehand. Starting with a group of six juveniles and letting them pair off naturally gives the best odds of success.
