Found in the fast-moving streams of the Malay Peninsula, Homaloptera parclitella is a small hillstream loach that has evolved a body plan perfectly suited to life in strong current. Its paired fins splay out horizontally, its belly is flattened, and the whole underside works together as a suction cup that lets the fish cling to rock surfaces with impressive grip. Rather than swimming freely, it tends to crawl and hop from stone to stone. Behavior that's earned members of this group the nickname 'lizard loaches' among keepers who have spent time watching them. Identification can be tricky since this species closely resembles a couple of near relatives, but H. parclitella consistently shows two broad, well-defined saddle-shaped markings along the dorsal surface, one just behind the head, one at the base of the dorsal fin, along with a dark patch at the base of the tail. Those two saddles are the quickest shortcut to a confident ID. In the aquarium, it's a peaceful fish and accessible enough for beginners willing to do their homework on flow and tankmates. Keep a group of six or more; in smaller numbers it tends to be timid, but a proper group will actively interact and periodically line up together facing directly into the current, which is genuinely entertaining to watch.
