Found in rapid-running mountain streams of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, as well as the Malay Peninsula and Maeklong drainage, Homaloptera smithi is one of the more familiar members of a group sometimes called lizard or gecko loaches. A nickname that suits them well. Like other balitorids, this species has a body built for life in torrential currents: horizontally spread paired fins, a flattened head and belly, and an arrangement that functions as a powerful suction cup, letting the fish grip rocks and substrate firmly against the flow. Rather than swimming freely, it tends to crawl and hop across surfaces, which makes it genuinely interesting to watch. Adults naturally occupy fast, high-gradient stretches of cobble and bedrock, while younger fish favor slower, root-edged areas. In the aquarium, a strong current and well-oxygenated water are non-negotiables. This is an intermediate-level fish, not because it's especially delicate, but because recreating that brisk, clean hillstream environment takes some commitment. It's a social species in the wild, so keeping a group of six or more brings out bolder, more natural behavior and makes the interactions between individuals easy to appreciate. Tankmates drawn from similar fast-water habitats, hillstream gobies, Garra, Devario, and related catfishes, are the best choices.
