Found clinging to boulders in fast-flowing hill streams across the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, the Malay Peninsula, and Indonesia, Homaloptera zollingeri is sometimes sold in the trade as the 'black gecko' or 'lizard' loach. Names that suit it perfectly. Its entire body plan is engineered for turbulent current: the head and belly are strongly flattened, the paired fins splay out horizontally, and together they form a suction surface powerful enough to anchor the fish against strong flow. Rather than swimming freely, it crawls and hops across rocky substrates in a way that looks nothing like a typical fish. It reaches a modest size of roughly two to four inches and has a mostly dark, patterned body with a noticeably black caudal fin. In the wild it feeds primarily on insect larvae and other small invertebrates. This species is naturally gregarious, so keeping a group of six or more will bring out its best behavior. Solitary individuals tend to stay hidden and withdrawn. Tankmates should come from similar fast-water habitats: rheophilic danios, Garra, Barilius, small gobies, and stream-adapted catfishes all work well. Breeding has not been documented in aquaria. An intermediate-level species, it rewards careful setup with a high-flow, well-oxygenated tank over a bed of smooth rocks.
