Snowball Pleco
Hypancistrus inspector
Bold spotted pleco from Venezuelan rapids, compact enough for a mid-size tank.

About
The Snowball Pleco (Hypancistrus inspector) is a compact armored catfish originating from the fast-moving, rock-strewn waters of the upper Negro, Casiquiare, and upper Orinoco river systems in Venezuela. Its appearance is distinctive: a dark brown to black body covered in large whitish to yellowish spots, with the spots on the head noticeably smaller than those elsewhere on the body. In adults, the spots near the upper lobe of the tail tend to merge into banding, which can help tell this species apart from close relatives. It shares the most resemblance with Hypancistrus contradens, but differences in dorsal fin reach and spot sizing on the head make a reliable separation possible with a careful look. In the wild, specimens turn up among rocks and rapids, and stomach content studies show a diet of algae, detritus, and even plant seeds, reflecting an omnivorous feeding strategy. In the aquarium this species is peaceful and can work in a well-chosen community setup, though it should not be housed with other Hypancistrus species due to the real risk of hybridization. Captive breeding has been documented, with the male taking responsibility for guarding eggs in a cave-spawning setup. An intermediate-level keeper comfortable with moderately soft, warm water and a species-appropriate diet should find this pleco a rewarding addition.
