About

Hypancistrus sp. L066 is a small, sturdy loricariid from the rio Xingu in Pará state, northern Brazil, where it inhabits the warm, soft waters downstream around the Belo Monte region. In the trade it goes by names like network pleco and scribbled pleco, both referencing its most immediately obvious feature. A variable pattern of pale lines and spots scattered across a darker base. That variability is worth flagging because it makes identification tricky; this species is frequently mixed up with L333 and L400. What sets it apart from L333 is a noticeably finer, more delicate pale pattern, while compared to L400 it has a squatter, less elongated body profile. Like all Hypancistrus, its lower jaw teeth are roughly twice the length of those on the upper jaw, which reflects a diet leaning more toward meaty foods and biofilm than plant matter. Behaviorally it is calm and undemanding, and its manageable adult size makes it a workable choice even for newer keepers with a reasonably sized tank. It does breed in captivity with some regularity. Males guard eggs and fry inside caves, so providing suitable spawning sites is worthwhile. One important caveat: keep it away from other Hypancistrus species, since hybridization between closely related members of this genus is a genuine concern.
