Cochliodon Pleco
Hypostomus cochliodon
A hefty South American pleco with a surprisingly specialized wood-scraping bite.

About
Found in the Paraguay and middle Paraná River basins of South America, Hypostomus cochliodon is a sizeable pleco that can push close to ten inches as an adult. Like others in its genus, it possesses a notably robust, spoon-shaped dentition that sets it apart from many of the more commonly kept plecos. Those teeth are well adapted to scraping and processing woody material, so driftwood in the aquarium is more than just decoration for this fish. It genuinely benefits from having it available. The genus also has a capacity for facultative air breathing, meaning individuals can supplement gill respiration by gulping air when oxygen levels drop, which reflects the variable conditions these fish encounter in the wild. In the aquarium, a 55-gallon tank is generally the starting point, and a longer footprint gives this fish room to patrol the bottom comfortably. Care sits at an intermediate level, mostly because of its eventual size and its need for a well-maintained environment over what can be a lifespan of eight to twelve years. Filtration should be robust, as with any large bottom dweller. It is an omnivore, so a varied diet including vegetable matter and occasional protein keeps it in good condition.
