The Indian Ricefish (Oryzias dancena) is a small, slender cyprinodontiform relative from coastal and low-lying freshwater and brackish habitats across India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It rarely exceeds an inch and a half in length, so scale matters when choosing tankmates. This species does best alongside other diminutive fish like small danios, Microdevario, or Trigonostigma, and it coexists well with Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp. Keep it in groups of eight or more; a lone individual or a small group tends to be shy and washed-out, while a proper shoal shows noticeably more confident behavior and better coloration. Males are the more ornate sex, sporting extended filaments on the anal fin tipped in white, along with a blue submarginal band on that same fin that deepens when they are in breeding condition. Speaking of breeding. This species is remarkably productive and accessible even for newer keepers. Females carry fertilized eggs hanging from the genital pore before depositing them in fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop. Adults generally leave the eggs alone but will pick off free-swimming fry, so dense planting or a dedicated rearing container goes a long way. One practical note: avoid mixing this species with other Oryzias, as hybridization between species in the genus has been confirmed under controlled conditions.
