The Krabi Mouth Brooding Betta (Betta simplex) is a lesser-known gem from the Krabi province of southern Thailand, where it occupies limestone-fed streams, pools, and marshy areas. Unlike the familiar Siamese fighting fish, this species belongs to a mouthbrooding group. The male incubates fertilized eggs in his mouth for up to two weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, a process that's genuinely fascinating to observe. Appearance-wise, the body and fins carry a pale reddish tone, the head deepens to a darker reddish hue, and the gill covers shimmer with greenish-blue iridescent scales. Rounded unpaired fins and a dark marginal band on the anal and caudal fins help distinguish it within its species complex. In the wild it feeds on insects and zooplankton, so a carnivore-appropriate diet suits it well in captivity. Temperament is calmer than many bettas, pairs or small groups can work, but it still isn't cut out for a busy community setup. Tankmates, if chosen at all, should be very peaceful and ideally come from similar limestone stream habitats. Like all members of the anabantoid suborder, it uses a labyrinth organ to breathe air directly, so a tightly covered tank with warm, humid air above the water line is important, especially when raising fry.
