Least Killifish

The least killifish (Heterandria formosa) is something of a misnomer. Despite the name, this North American native is actually a livebearer, not a killifish at all, and it holds the distinction of being the smallest known livebearing fish species. Found naturally in slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters from North Carolina down through southern Louisiana, it rarely exceeds an inch in length even as an adult. The males are noticeably smaller than females and so tiny that they genuinely risk being eaten by many common aquarium fish. For this reason, it does best in a dedicated setup or alongside very small, non-predatory companions like dwarf corydoras, pencilfish, otocinclus, or freshwater shrimp. It is thoroughly peaceful and works well as a colony in a planted tank. What really sets this species apart from other livebearers is its reproductive strategy: rather than dropping a defined brood every few weeks, females carry fry at multiple stages of development simultaneously, a process called superfoetation. The practical result is a steady trickle of a few fry every day or two, and those fry arrive large enough to eat powdered foods right away. Adults typically show no interest in eating their offspring. If you keep males and females together, breeding is essentially inevitable, which makes it a genuinely rewarding choice for anyone new to keeping livebearers.
