About

The Blue Linckia Starfish (Linckia laevigata) is one of the most recognizable sea stars in the saltwater hobby, largely because that color is genuinely hard to believe until you see it in person. A clean, saturated blue that covers the entire body from arm tip to central disc. In the wild it turns up across a broad stretch of the Indian Ocean, from the waters off Mozambique and the Mascarene Basin out through the wider West Indian Ocean, typically cruising rubble zones and reef flats in shallow, well-oxygenated water. It's a large animal at full size, pushing close to a foot across, so it needs a genuinely spacious, mature reef system to thrive. That maturity is the real key with this species. It grazes on microbial films, detritus, and small organic matter across live rock and sandy substrate, and a tank that hasn't had time to develop those food sources will leave it struggling. Despite being listed as beginner-appropriate in terms of water chemistry tolerance, it demands a stable, well-established system and does poorly with even brief lapses in salinity or temperature. Acclimate slowly and keep conditions consistent, and this sea star can live well over a decade.
