The Mekong croaking gourami (Trichopsis schalleri) is a small but genuinely fascinating labyrinth fish from the Mekong basin, where it lives in shallow, slow-moving habitats like marshes, rice paddies, and swampy backwaters. It rarely exceeds two inches, but what it lacks in size it more than compensates for in personality. Like its relatives in the genus Trichopsis, this species produces audible croaking and purring sounds through a specialized mechanism involving modified pectoral-fin tendons, essentially plucked like guitar strings. These sounds play a real role in social life: fish appear to use acoustic and visual signals together to assess rivals and settle disputes without resorting to physical combat. Females are the ones that initiate spawning by producing purring sounds, which is a behavior unique among fishes. Identifying T. schalleri is straightforward once you know what to look for: a single solid dark stripe runs along the midline, with a second stripe above it that shifts in intensity depending on the fish's mood, sometimes disappearing almost entirely. This distinguishes it from the closely related T. pumila, which has a broken upper stripe that stays consistent regardless of mood. Temperament is generally peaceful outside of spawning, and a pair or small group can be kept together with interesting results. Breeding is rewarding but does require attention to a tightly sealed tank, as the developing fry need access to warm, humid air to properly form their labyrinth organs.
