Porcelain Anemone Crab

The porcelain anemone crab (Neopetrolisthes maculatus) is one of those reef tank residents that consistently draws attention, not just for its appearance but for its remarkable lifestyle. Despite the name, it isn't a true crab. It belongs to a separate group closer to squat lobsters, though you'd be forgiven for not noticing at first glance. The white body is dotted with reddish-brown spots, giving it a clean, patterned look that pairs nicely with the anemone it calls home. In the wild, these crabs live in pairs or small groups tucked among the tentacles of large anemones, relying on their host for shelter while remaining largely immune to the stings that would deter other animals. They aren't passive guests, though. They actively feed by sweeping the water column with feathery appendages near their mouth, filtering out plankton and fine organic particles. In the aquarium, they carry that same behavior over well, making them genuinely interesting to watch during feeding time. They're considered a manageable choice for newer reef keepers, provided an anemone host is available. Peaceful toward most tankmates, they rely more on retreating than fighting, and may occasionally lose a claw to more aggressive neighbors. Though they can regenerate it over time.
