Redtail Notho
Nothobranchius guentheri
Also known as: Gunther's nothobranch
A jewel-bright killifish that lives fast, dies young, and leaves drought-proof eggs.

About
The Redtail Notho (Nothobranchius guentheri) is one of the classic annual killifish, a group that has quietly fascinated a dedicated corner of the hobby for decades. Native exclusively to Unguja Island in the Zanzibar archipelago off eastern Tanzania, it inhabits a world of temporary pools, roadside ditches, and shallow swamps that evaporate completely each dry season. The fish's entire life strategy is built around that reality: adults live for only a year or two at most, but their eggs are buried in the substrate and can survive months of total desiccation before hatching when the rains return. That reproductive biology makes keeping this species an experience unlike most other freshwater fish. In the aquarium you collect the eggs, store them in slightly moist peat or substrate, and trigger hatching yourself by reintroducing water after the appropriate incubation period of roughly three to four months. Males are vividly colored compared to the more subdued females, which is typical for the genus. The Redtail Notho is best suited to keepers who have some experience under their belt and an interest in the spawning side of the hobby. That hands-on egg-management process is genuinely rewarding, but it does require planning and attention.
