The Oaxaca Cichlid (Vieja zonata) is a robust, moderately aggressive cichlid native to the Tehuantepec River basin on Mexico's Pacific slope. A relatively restricted natural range that makes it something of a rarity in the hobby. You're unlikely to find one at your local fish store; specialist cichlid dealers are usually the best bet. In terms of appearance, it's a solidly built fish that can reach impressive sizes, with the bold body patterning typical of the Vieja genus. Despite its aggression, it's considered a hardy species that intermediate keepers can manage successfully, provided the tank is genuinely spacious. Keeping it with other large cichlids is possible, but your best odds come from introducing everyone as juveniles so they grow up together and establish territories gradually. Any fish small enough to be swallowed is essentially a meal, so tankmate selection matters. Breeding pairs present their own challenge. Getting two adults to tolerate each other long enough to spawn requires patience. Once they do pair off, they become attentive parents, cleaning and guarding a flat spawning surface together. Eggs hatch within a few days, and the fry develop quickly. The adults may turn on their own brood when ready to breed again, so watch for that shift and move the youngsters out in time.
