Native to the freshwater streams of Lanyu, also known as Orchid Island, off the southeastern coast of Taiwan, Rhinogobius lanyuensis is a small and relatively obscure goby with a limited natural range. The species has also been recorded from parts of China, though its distribution remains geographically restricted compared to many of its relatives in the Rhinogobius genus. Adults stay compact, typically reaching somewhere between an inch and a half and just under three inches, making this a genuinely small fish suited to modest aquarium setups. Like other stream gobies in this group, it likely favors clean, well-oxygenated water with good flow, reflecting the nature of the island streams it calls home. Rhinogobius gobies as a whole tend to be bottom-dwellers with plenty of personality packed into a small frame, often perching on rocks and substrate rather than actively swimming mid-water. For a fish with such a narrow native range, it is considered accessible for beginner keepers, which is a pleasant surprise. Aquarium availability is probably limited given how localized this species is in the wild, but for goby enthusiasts keen on the Rhinogobius group, it represents an interesting and rewarding find.
