The Sarabia Cichlid (Paraneetroplus bulleri) is a moderately sized cichlid from the Coatzacoalcos River drainage in southern Mexico, where it occupies fast-moving, clear highland streams. In the wild it grazes on algae and the small invertebrates and organic material that accumulate on submerged surfaces. A feeding strategy that makes it adaptable and easy to satisfy in captivity with a varied diet including vegetable matter. Its origins in brisk montane waterways mean it appreciates good filtration and strong water movement in the aquarium, and it tends to do best when conditions are kept clean and well-oxygenated. For a Central American cichlid, it carries a reputation as a relatively manageable fish, often considered a reasonable choice even for keepers who are newer to the cichlid world. That said, it can reach a solid ten inches and will need a spacious setup to thrive comfortably over its potentially long lifespan. Like most cichlids from this region it will show territorial tendencies, particularly when breeding, so tankmate selection deserves some thought. Robust, similarly sized fish tend to fare better alongside it than smaller or more delicate companions. The Sarabia Cichlid is a rewarding long-term resident for anyone drawn to Mexican riverine species.
