The pearlspot cichlid (Etroplus suratensis), also known as the green chromide or karimeen, belongs to a genus with a remarkable distinction: Etroplus is the only cichlid group native to the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. That alone makes it worth knowing. In the wild, it inhabits estuaries, lagoons, large rivers, and reservoirs across India and Sri Lanka, tolerating a wide salinity range from fresh to near-marine conditions. Its greenish-brown body is marked by six dark vertical bars and rows of scales with pale, pearly central spots. A pattern that sets it apart from its smaller relative, the orange chromide. Behaviorally, this species is more complex than many cichlids. Outside of spawning, it is relatively peaceable and actually benefits from being kept in groups of eight or more, as smaller numbers tend to result in either nervous, unsettled fish or bullying of lower-ranking individuals. Adding open-water schooling fish as dithers helps considerably. Breeding pairs form temporary bonds and dedicate themselves fully to broodcare. Both parents guard eggs and fry around the clock, and newly free-swimming fry will graze on parental body mucus in their first few days. This is an intermediate-level species suited to hobbyists with some cichlid experience, a spacious tank, and an appreciation for genuinely unusual natural history.
