The Brown Dot Peckoltia (Peckoltia oligospila) is a smallish armored catfish from the lower Amazon basin in Brazil, where it likely occupies woody, debris-rich stretches of river in the same way most plecos do. Hugging cover and foraging opportunistically. Its patterning is understated compared to many of its relatives: the body carries faint spots and saddle markings rather than bold stripes or reticulations, and the spots in the caudal fin remain separate rather than merging into bands. That subtlety is actually one of the features that helps identify it, since only a handful of close relatives share the same quiet look. Like others in its genus, it has the ability to breathe air when oxygen levels drop, which speaks to the kind of low-oxygen backwater environments these fish can encounter in the wild. In the aquarium it generally minds its own business with non-plecos, but it will get territorial toward its own kind and other similarly-built catfish, so tankmates should be chosen with that in mind. It is a cave-spawner, with the male taking on guard duty after eggs are laid. A rewarding behavior to observe if you can set up appropriate spawning sites. This is a reasonable choice for a keeper with some pleco experience looking for something a little off the beaten path.
