Anemone Shrimp

The anemone shrimp (Periclimenes brevicarpalis) is one of those reef creatures that seems too fragile for its own lifestyle, yet makes its home right in the stinging embrace of sea anemones. Like clownfish, it has developed a tolerance for anemone nematocysts, using the host as both shelter and hunting ground while picking off small parasites, mucus, and food scraps. The body is largely transparent with a handful of white-edged orange spots scattered across it, giving the shrimp a ghostly, almost decorated appearance that lets it blend surprisingly well against the busy texture of an anemone's column and tentacles. In the aquarium, keeping one alongside an appropriate host anemone is the most natural setup, though it will sometimes associate with other cnidarians if no anemone is available. It stays small and is generally peaceful with tankmates that won't treat it as a snack, so sensible fish selection matters more than elaborate care routines. For a saltwater invertebrate, this species is considered fairly approachable even for newer reef keepers, as long as water quality is kept stable and acclimation is done carefully. Drip acclimation is particularly important for shrimp, which are sensitive to sudden shifts in salinity and chemistry.
