About this strain
Bold alternating bands or patches of black and yellow — occasionally black and orange — across the body, directly invoking the coloration of a bumblebee. The pattern varies from clearly banded individuals to those with a more mottled yellow-and-black distribution. Look for fish with high-contrast, well-defined markings; dull or brownish yellow and incomplete black patterning indicate weaker stock. Relatively uncommon compared to red or sunset varieties, making it a fun find at specialty stores. Care is identical to other platy varieties — undemanding and community-safe. The color holds better in soft to moderately hard water with a good varied diet.
Origin
A selectively bred commercial strain, most likely developed and popularized by Southeast Asian export farms in the late 20th century. Specific breeding origins are not well-documented in hobby literature.
