About this strain
While X. variatus is technically a separate species, fish sold in the hobby as 'Variatus Platy' or 'Variable Platy' are typically interspecific hybrids of X. maculatus × X. variatus, combining traits of both. They tend to be slightly more elongated than pure maculatus, with males often showing rich yellows, oranges, and blues in variable combinations. The dorsal fin is sometimes larger than in standard platies. Hardier in cooler temperatures than pure maculatus strains — they can tolerate as low as 60°F, making them suitable for unheated setups in temperate climates. Behavior and care are otherwise identical to standard platies.
Origin
Hybrid lines between X. maculatus and X. variatus have been produced in the ornamental trade since at least the mid-20th century. Commercial production is widespread across Asian and Eastern European farms; no single originator is credited.
