About this strain
The posterior half of the body is dominated by a deep black or dark gray patch that contrasts sharply with a lighter anterior — the visual impression is exactly what the name promises. In quality specimens the division between light and dark is clean and runs roughly behind the pectoral fins. The base color ahead of the tuxedo patch varies and is often red, gold, or blue depending on the cross. Fading of the black patch can occur under poor conditions or with age; high-quality food and stable water help maintain contrast. A robust, easy-to-keep variety.
Origin
Developed through selective breeding programs in commercial fish farms, primarily in Asia and Europe, during the latter half of the 20th century. The tuxedo pattern gene has been studied in Xiphophorus genetics research and is well-documented in the scientific literature.
