About this strain
A multi-hued variety that typically shows patches of red, yellow, blue, and sometimes green across the body and fins — no single dominant color defines it. The effect is painterly and chaotic in the best way, often with iridescent scales catching light differently depending on angle. Quality varies enormously; the best specimens have vivid, well-distributed color rather than a muddy blend. Rainbow platyfish can look quite different from individual to individual, which is part of their charm. They need stable water conditions and a nutrient-rich diet to maintain color intensity. A great centerpiece fish in a small community tank.
Origin
The Rainbow platy is a commercially developed strain combining multiple color genes through intensive selective breeding, primarily in Southeast Asian and Floridian fish farms. The variety became commercially prominent in the 1980s–90s.
