Parrot Platy Platy

Xiphophorus maculatus

About this strain

Features a vivid multi-colored body with large, clearly delineated patches of red, blue, green, and yellow — the bold mosaic pattern is meant to evoke the plumage of a parrot. Unlike the Rainbow platy's more blended look, the Parrot variety tends toward distinct color blocks. The fins are often clear to lightly tinted, allowing the body pattern to be the focal point. Color expression is highly line-dependent; specimens from quality breeders show saturated, clean patches while lower-grade stock can appear washed out. Relatively hardy and peaceful. A good diet rich in carotenoids and spirulina helps keep the colors vivid long-term.

Origin

A commercial strain developed through intensive selective breeding, primarily by Southeast Asian ornamental fish farms. The variety gained hobby visibility in the 1990s–2000s, though specific breeding records are not publicly available.
