About this strain
A speckled variety covered in an irregular scatter of small black dots or flecks over a pale silver, white, or light gray background — exactly the look the name describes. The speckling varies in density across individuals; heavily spotted fish are generally more prized. The fins may also carry scattered melanophore spots. It's a subtler variety compared to bold solid-color strains, but in a planted tank the natural, slightly wild-type-adjacent look works well. The pattern is relatively stable and breeds reasonably true. A good choice for hobbyists who find the heavily engineered solid-color strains less appealing.
Origin
A strain stabilized through selective breeding in commercial fish farms, likely in Asia, during the latter 20th century. The scattered spotting reflects naturally occurring melanophore distribution in Xiphophorus maculatus, selected and intensified for the ornamental trade.
