The dwarf stonebasher (Pollimyrus castelnaui) is a small weakly electric fish native to several river systems in southern and central Africa, including the Okavango basin, the upper Zambezi, the Kafue, the Cunene, and river drainages connected to northern Lake Malawi. In the wild it keeps close to densely vegetated margins of rivers and floodplain lagoons, often hugging the underside of surface plants in calm, shallow backwaters. A habitat preference worth replicating in the aquarium with plenty of floating or emergent vegetation. Like other members of the mormyrid family, it generates weak electric fields used for navigation and communication, which makes a group of them genuinely fascinating to observe. Its diet in nature leans heavily on aquatic insect larvae, particularly chironomid midges, so it does best when offered live or frozen foods like bloodworms and daphnia rather than dry prepared foods alone. Reaching only about three inches at most, it is a compact fish, but mormyrids generally appreciate more space than their size might suggest, partly because they are active and can be territorial with their own kind. This is an intermediate-level species. Not brutally demanding, but it rewards keepers who pay attention to water quality and diet.
