The rocket panchax (Pseudepiplatys annulatus) is one of the smallest killifish you'll encounter in the hobby, and one of the most visually distinctive at that size. Its body is ringed with alternating dark and pale bands, giving it an almost banded pipefish quality that stands out in a nano setup. In the wild it inhabits shallow coastal swamps and slow-moving lowland waters across Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Soft, often acidic environments with dense vegetation. Unlike many killifish, it isn't seasonal, meaning it doesn't follow the annual spawn-and-die cycle typical of some of its relatives, which makes it a somewhat more straightforward fish to keep long-term. That said, don't let the beginner care label lull you into complacency. This species can be finicky in captivity and does best in a mature, stable aquarium with gentle filtration and plenty of cover. It's a timid fish by nature and will spend a lot of time tucked into plants or hiding spots, so a well-planted tank isn't just decorative, it's genuinely important for the fish's confidence. It does well with other small, calm tankmates and poses no threat to anything it can't fit in its mouth.
