Apalachee Shiner

The Apalachee Shiner (Pteronotropis grandipinnis) is a small native minnow from the coastal plain drainages of Georgia, Alabama, and Florida, where it occupies the sandy and silty pools and runs of headwater streams and small rivers. In the wild it gravitates toward undercut banks and submerged debris, which tells you something useful about how to set up its aquarium. Give it plenty of cover, whether that's driftwood, leaf litter, or overhanging vegetation along the tank walls. The species is absent from the upper reaches of the Chattahoochee system, making its range fairly tightly defined to the Apalachicola drainage. Males develop noticeably enlarged fins, which is the feature that gives the species its name and makes them easy to tell apart from females, especially when they color up during breeding displays. Like many North American shiners, they do best in a species-focused or carefully chosen community setup where their active, somewhat social nature can come through properly. This isn't a fish you dump in a generic community tank and forget. An intermediate level of experience and some attention to water quality and flow will go a long way toward keeping them healthy and showing their best colors over a lifespan that can stretch close to a decade with good care.
