The Southern Sailfin Catfish (Pterygoplichthys anisitsi) is one of the larger plecos you'll encounter in the hobby, and it commands attention the moment it stakes out its territory on the bottom glass. Native to the river systems of Paraguay, the middle Paraná, Bermejo, and Uruguay basins in South America, this fish has the look of something that crawled out of the Cretaceous. Heavily armored with bony scutes, a broad flattened body, and the sail-like dorsal fin that gives the group its common name. One of its more fascinating biological quirks is the ability to breathe air directly, allowing it to survive in oxygen-depleted or stagnant conditions that would stress most fish. A real testament to how tough these animals are. That hardiness makes them forgiving for newer keepers from a care standpoint, though the sheer size they reach as adults means you need to be honest with yourself about tank space before bringing one home. They're generally peaceful toward tankmates and spend most of their time grazing surfaces for algae and biofilm, though they'll readily accept a varied diet. Plan for the long haul. These fish can live well into their second decade with proper care.
