The pygmy swordtail (Xiphophorus pygmaeus) is a genuinely small livebearer native to the Pánuco River system in northeastern Mexico, where it inhabits clear, flowing waters. Adults rarely push past an inch and a half, making this one of the more compact members of a genus that includes some fairly sizeable fish. Despite the diminutive frame, it carries itself with the same active, curious energy you'd expect from any Xiphophorus. Constantly on the move and engaged with its surroundings. Temperament is peaceful, which opens up a good range of tankmate options as long as you're pairing it with fish of a similar scale and disposition. Because of its small size, keeping a group in a well-planted setup really lets the species shine behaviorally, and the cover gives individuals somewhere to retreat if needed. As a livebearer it's not especially difficult to breed, though getting the best out of the species in terms of health and coloration does reward a keeper who pays attention to water quality and diet. It's listed at intermediate care partly for that reason. Not a fish that will punish beginner mistakes harshly, but one that genuinely responds well to thoughtful husbandry. A rewarding choice for anyone who appreciates small livebearers beyond the usual guppies and platies.
