The Red Lyretail Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) is a striking cultivated form of one of the hobby's most enduring livebearers, developed through careful selective breeding to push coloration and fin shape well beyond what you'd find in wild populations. This particular variant is prized for an intense, saturated red that runs from head to tail, paired with a distinctively ruffled dorsal fin, sometimes called a cauliflower or sabertail form, and a shortened, thickened sword extension rather than the long, slender point of classic swordtails. Males carry the signature sword on the lower tail lobe, while females share the same rich coloration and ornate dorsal but lack that extension entirely. In the aquarium, these fish are active and inquisitive, spending most of their time cruising the mid to upper water column and investigating every corner of their surroundings. That energy makes them genuinely entertaining to keep. As livebearers go, swordtails are among the more forgiving choices for newer fishkeepers, tolerating a range of conditions without much fuss, though they do appreciate a slightly alkaline, hard water setup. A spacious, well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming room suits them well, and males can be territorial with one another, so keeping groups thoughtfully is worth considering.
