The Jack Dempsey (Rocio octofasciata) earned its colorful name from a heavyweight boxing champion of the 1920s, reportedly because of its forceful facial features and combative personality. And the comparison holds up in the aquarium. Native to the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico down through Honduras, this cichlid naturally inhabits sluggish, murky waterways: swampy canals, drainage ditches, and slow coastal rivers with muddy or sandy bottoms and heavy vegetation. In the wild it feeds opportunistically on worms, insects, crustaceans, and smaller fish. Body coloration is dark with rows of iridescent blue-green spots scattered across the flanks, and the pattern becomes more vivid as fish mature. There is also an ornamental form, the electric blue Jack Dempsey, which carries an intensified blue coloration traced to a naturally occurring mutation. These blue variants tend to stay a bit smaller and may be somewhat calmer in temperament, though individual variation exists. Keeping Jack Dempseys with other cichlids requires careful planning and generous space, as adults are territorial and especially hostile toward similarly shaped species. Young fish can coexist for a time, but aggression ramps up significantly at sexual maturity. Established pairs generally tolerate each other and will spawn cooperatively on flat surfaces, raising fry together. Despite the attitude, this species is forgiving of a range of water conditions and can suit a keeper who does their homework on tankmate selection.
