Round-tailed Paradise Fish

Found across a broad sweep of East Asia from the Pearl River in southern China up through Korea and Japan to the Amur basin in the far north, this round-tailed paradise fish, Macropodus ocellatus, is one of the most cold-tolerant labyrinth fishes you can keep. Juveniles and adults have both been observed moving around beneath ice cover in winter, which sets this species well apart from most tropical aquarium residents. Like all anabantoids it carries a labyrinth organ above its gill chamber, a folded, highly vascularised structure that lets it breathe atmospheric air directly. A handy adaptation for the low-oxygen, seasonally extreme waters it calls home in the wild. Color varies noticeably between wild populations, though that variation hasn't been formally documented. Males grow elongated rays on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins and display these impressively during courtship. Territorial instincts kick in when males are breeding-ready, but outside of that window the species is generally manageable as a group given enough space and cover. It builds bubble nests, often tucking them into surface vegetation, and the breeding process follows the classic osphronemid embrace pattern. Fry need access to warm, humid air above the water surface for proper labyrinth development, so a tight-fitting lid is genuinely important. With a lifespan reaching into the high single digits, this is a rewarding long-term project for a keeper with some anabantoid experience.
