The African Blackchin Tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron) is a robust, adaptable cichlid native to the lagoons, estuaries, and mangrove zones stretching along the West African coast from Mauritania down to Cameroon. Its common name comes from the distinctive dark pigmentation on the chin and lower jaw that sets it apart from similar tilapines. In the wild, this fish moves freely between freshwater streams, brackish lagoons, and saltier coastal waters, which tells you something important about how forgiving it can be in captivity. Though a brackish setup more closely mirrors its natural home. Adults reach a solid 6 to 8 inches and are schooling fish by nature, so keeping a group rather than a lone individual tends to produce calmer, more natural behavior. Activity ramps up after dark; this is a primarily nocturnal species that does most of its serious feeding at night, though it will pick opportunistically during the day. In the wild it grazes on algae, detritus, small invertebrates, and zooplankton, picking and swallowing food directly rather than filtering it. Its tolerance for a wide range of salinities makes it an interesting option for hobbyists interested in brackish setups, though its eventual size and need for companions mean you'll want to plan your tank space accordingly.
