The bumphead parrotfish (Scarus perrico) is a substantial, beak-faced fish native to the Eastern Pacific, ranging from the central Gulf of California south to Peru and out to the Galapagos Islands. In the wild it moves through shallow coastal waters in loose groups, using its fused, beak-like teeth to scrape coralline red algae and likely coral polyps directly from the reef substrate. A feeding style that leaves visible grazing scars on rock and coral alike. Adults are hefty fish, and that sheer size is the first thing any prospective keeper needs to reckon with: the minimum tank requirement is enormous, putting this species firmly out of reach for most home setups regardless of how the care level is rated. That 'beginner' tag refers more to the fish's general hardiness and straightforward dietary needs than to any notion that it's easy to house. Providing an appropriately scaled system with plenty of live rock for grazing is the central challenge here. For public aquaria or serious private collectors with the infrastructure to match, this parrotfish is a genuinely interesting display animal. A living demonstration of just how much ecological work a single grazing fish can do on a reef.
