Found in the tannin-rich forest streams of Borneo's Mahakam River basin, Betta channoides is a dwarf species that barely tops two inches and carries a temperament almost nothing like its more famous betta cousins. Males display a vivid scarlet body coloration that intensifies during courtship, and the species is closely related to Betta albimarginata. The two look so similar that fin spine counts and scale row measurements are often needed to tell them apart with certainty. Like all labyrinth fish, it can breathe atmospheric air directly, an adaptation well-suited to the shallow, oxygen-poor leaf litter habitats it calls home. In the aquarium, this species does best in a dedicated setup or alongside very small, calm tankmates. Anything larger or more boisterous will stress it into hiding. The breeding behavior is genuinely fascinating: the male is a paternal mouthbrooder who incubates a small clutch of eggs for up to three weeks before releasing fully formed, free-swimming fry. Brood sizes are tiny, sometimes fewer than ten juveniles, so patience is part of the deal. Soft, acidic water is non-negotiable here. This fish does not forgive hard or alkaline conditions. A rewarding species for intermediate keepers willing to meet its specific needs.
