The Squeaker Catfish (Synodontis waterloti) is an uncommon import from a string of West African river systems spanning Senegal, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. A region that doesn't send many fish to the hobby, which makes this one a genuine find when it does show up. Like others in the genus, it gets its common name from the audible squeaking sound it produces when handled or stressed, a result of friction in the pectoral fin joint. Those pectoral fins are also a useful identification feature: the serrated edges give them a distinctly toothed look that sets this species apart from many of its relatives. Coloration tends to show best over lighter substrates, so bare or pale sandy setups will get the most out of its patterning. Behavior-wise, this fish grows into a degree of territorial attitude, particularly toward other Synodontis, so tankmates should be chosen with care. Robust companions like West African cichlids, Alestiid tetras, Mormyrids, or larger barbs tend to hold their own without being at risk. Anything small enough to swallow is a bad idea. Breeding has not been documented in home aquaria. Despite being labeled beginner-suitable in terms of water chemistry tolerance, the aggression factor means it needs a thoughtful setup rather than a typical community tank.
