The San Domingo Cichlid (Thorichthys callolepis) is one of those under-the-radar species that tends to fly past most hobbyists, overshadowed by its more famous relatives like the firemouth. Native to the Coatzacoalcos River drainage on Mexico's Atlantic slope, this cichlid naturally occupies the rocky, faster-moving stretches of upper rivers and headwaters. A habitat that sets it apart from many of its genus, which tend to favor calmer, murkier conditions. In the aquarium, that background suggests it appreciates good water movement and a solid rocky aquascape rather than the soft-bottomed, heavily planted setups sometimes recommended for Central American cichlids as a whole. As a member of Thorichthys, it shares the broad body plan and laterally compressed profile typical of the group, with the scalation hinted at in its species name. Callolepis roughly translates to beautiful or hard scales. It reaches a modest adult size by cichlid standards, which makes it manageable for a dedicated cichlid tank without needing an enormous footprint. Care is rated intermediate, so some prior experience with cichlid behavior and water management will serve you well here. It is an omnivore and not particularly fussy about food, which at least keeps feeding straightforward.
